Review: Uglies – moved

Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Wow! This really is an interesting, thought provoking book. Westerfeld builds his story around the premise that, at age 16, Uglies are taken away and medically manipulated to become Pretties. Children stay with their ‘parent’ until about age 4, and then they are taken away to dormitories to wait until they reach the magic age. Tally Youngblood is about to turn 16 and she cannot wait – until she meets Shay, who wants to become a Smokie.

Exploring ideas of beauty, morality and control, this is a masterly novel. I want to read Pretties as soon as I finished the last word of Uglies.
